I.               Welcome / Call to Order

President Arlene Abbott called the meeting to order at 4:03 p.m.

II.             Review and Approval of the February Minutes

President Abbott noted and thanked Lynn Bourton for the excellent job for the February minutes. Changes in the minutes were made as follows: (1) In Section VII Ð change the title to NHRMA Workshop (the actual conference is held in September); (2) same section Ð change the workshop dates to reflect March 9 Ð 11, 2004. All present approved the February minutes with the above changes.

III.           TreasurerÕs Report

President Abbott reviewed the Balance Sheet, Transaction Report, Budget Report and Comparison Report. She noted the following: $170 under Òaccount balancesÓ is monies owed from the auction. All present approved the treasurerÕs report with no changes.

IV.          Membership Roster

President Abbott distributed a copy of the Chapter Roster. Sylvia Martinez advised that she and Melissa were planning on reviewing the roster this month and discussing ideas on how to encourage people to join both AVHRA and SHRM.

V.            HRCI Testing

President Abbott shared a situation with an AVHRA member (Ed Taylor) who had intended to test for his SPHR in December 2003. Apparently, he signed up but failed to attend and missed the 10 day grace period for a 50 percent refund of testing fee. After contacting HRCI and explaining his situation, the grace period was extended for the 50 percent refund. He contacted SHRM to inquire if he could use his fee paid for a different testing date, however, this request was declined because an outside contractor does the testing. The member became very upset and pulled his membership from SHRM. President Abbott forwarded this information to Marilyn Hoppen Ð who advised that HRCIÕs expectations are reasonable; however, the memberÕs complaints will be forwarded to SHRM.

President Abbott instructed Melissa, Sylvia and Ruth (and the Board at large) to remove Mr. Taylor from the membership roster, per his request.

VI.          Alcoa Wenatchee Works Poster Contest

President Abbott distributed a handout regarding a poster contest sponsored by Alcoa entitled ÒMaking a Difference in our CommunityÓ. Prizes are savings bonds ranging from $50 to $1,000.

VII.        SHRM Feedback / March Newsletter

Donna Schneider forwarded a survey to President Abbott to gather information regarding chapter and HR professionals. President Abbott requested that all Board members please complete the questionnaire on page 6 of the March newsletter, and forward to her attention via e-mail by April 15th. She will forward the responses to Donna.

VIII.      Academic/Certification Scholarships

Academic

President Abbott advised she would like to distribute scholarship information to the high schools. Is there a time better than another? After discussion, it was discovered that most scholarship information has already been distributed to the local high schools for fall scholarships; however, information can still be forwarded to Wenatchee and East Wenatchee High Schools. Karen Bland and Joy Neal will work with President Abbott in preparing information to forward.

Certification

Joan Lovitt advised she will not be able to do a study group for the fall. She has not yet started her group for the May test date.

IX.          CAN-Spam Act of 2003

President Abbott advised that we do not advertise AVHRAÕs seminars via e-mail; however, when we do send an e-mail on behalf of AVHRA, we need to have an Òopt-outÓ feature included in our messages.

XIV.      Programs

q      The March meeting is a business meeting. The 2004 Goals will be addressed as well as the Budget. Cami Glatt will provide information on the Legislative Platform.

q      For April, the Board again discussed the possibility of hosting Dr. Lennie Mees. He is author of ÒGet a Life AmericaÓ, works on health, wellness and stress management and has a syndicated talk show. Jack Powers of Central Washington Hospital has been approached about the possibility of co-sponsoring a half-day presentation for $1400. Jack has expressed that the hospital may be interested as a co-sponsor if there are at least 3 sponsors. Barbara Davis advised she will speak with her boss. President Abbott advised she will contact Dr. Mees about the possibility of doing the presentation for $900 + travel expenses. Jo Ann Tucker advised once we have the presentation scheduled, she will submit it to SHRM for credit. There was discussion regarding advertising, etc. Sylvia Martinez advised AVHRA could advertise through her organization at a lesser not-for-profit advertising rate.

q      For May, discussion was about inviting Javier Lozano with Marilyn HoppenÕs office to speak on diversity and SHRM leadership. If we invite Javier, Marilyn Hoppen will not be available for the June meeting as they are a small office and have to make themselves available to many chapters.

q      For June, it was suggested to invite either Donna Schneider or Rochelle Collard from the State Council to speak on SHRM membership.

q      July Ð no meeting is scheduled.

q      In August, Steve Honomura is presenting Diversity in the Workplace for the Washington Library Association. Joy Neal invited AVHRA to join the NCRL at the libraryÕs rate. Discussion was tabled until the April Board meeting.

q      For November Ð Sherman Alexie Ð President Abbott is trying to et both the Rotary and the Wenatchee Valley College on board. She is trying to get the Rotary or Wenatchee Valley College to co-sponsor (diversity, education and leadership).

XV.        Other Business

q      Cami Glatt gave a brief update on the Legislative Update in the newsletter. She advised she is looking for more HR-related issues.

q      Joy Neal shared information regarding a new initiative (I-864) being brought out by Tim Eyman. She distributed a flyer produced by NCRL in regard to how this initiative would affect not only the library, but cities and towns as well.

q      Barbara Davis advised she would write a thank-you note to Darlene Schneider at the Business Journal for the nice articles she has written about AVHRA.

q      President Abbott shared the following:

q      Venulex Member Benefit Program Ð HR points of interest. President Abbott requested we review the handout and give her feedback at the next Board meeting.

q      Rich Hamilton, who did training for Disney, now does workshops on customer service, leadership, etc. President Abbott will forward information (via e-mail) and requested feedback at the next Board meeting.
