Board Meeting Ð June 8, 2004
Link Transit, 2700 Euclid Avenue, Wenatchee WA 98801
Present:
Arlene Abbott Joan Lovitt Janice Soder
Joy Neal Karen Bland Annie Horey
Sylvia Martinez Lisa Turner Melissa Wear-Grimm
President Arlene Abbott called the meeting to order at 4:10 p.m. President Abbott commented that she will bring cookies and an accurate agenda to the next meeting.
There were noted the following corrections to the body of the May 2004 minutes:
Ÿ Under those Present Ð delete Melissa Wear-Grimm and add Sylvia Martinez.
Ÿ Under TreasurerÕs Report Ð Only the balance sheet and transaction report were reviewed, and a synopsis given of the wellness seminar and expenses.
Ÿ Under School to Work Ð change name from Melissa Wear-Grimm to Lisa Turner.
Annie Horey moved to approve the May minutes with the above corrections, seconded by Joy Neal. Motion passed by unanimous vote.
Treasurer Annie Horey reviewed the Balance Sheet and Transaction Report. The following was discussed:
Ÿ YWCA needs to be paid. President Abbott will contact Dee at the YWCA again.
Ÿ Annie will issue a check in the amount of $500 payable to NCRL in payment of AVHRAÕs co-sponsorship of the August conference (Steve Hanamura).
Ÿ Purchase of two plaque holders to display awards at general meetings. Annie advised she could get these at the Dollar Store.
All present approved the treasurerÕs report with no changes.
Joy Neal advised that she reported on the meeting last month and did not have anything more to add.
Recognizing a need to market the academic scholarship, discussion followed:
Ÿ That the marketing needed to be face-to-face (as opposed to mailing).
Ÿ In order to speak with the best contact person, President Abbott will contact Angela Prater at Wenatchee Valley College, and Dr. Nimnicht at Central WA University. (Lisa Turner advised that it probably was not necessary to meet personally with Dr. Nimnicht as he is very supportive of SHRM and a telephone or e-mail conversation would most likely suffice).
Ÿ Need to form a review committee: Annie Horey will chair this committee and collect the scholarship applications. Joan Lovitt volunteered to sit on the committee as well.
Ÿ Scholarship will be awarded for Winter 2005 quarter.
Ÿ Information will be sent out in late August or first part of September, with an October 29th deadline.
Ÿ Have Eric West put application on the website.
Certification
Karen Bland re-typed the certification scholarship form, with changes to dates and application submittal. Discussion followed:
Ÿ Do not allow the applicant to submit the application via e-mail. List only AVHRAÕs post-office box address for submitting the application and attachments. All present agreed.
Ÿ Change the scholarship amount from a flat $250 (PHR exam fee) to no amount noted so that those persons testing for an SPHR certification would be awarded the full exam fee of $375. President Abbott noted that if this was a change the board was in favor of, a motion needed to be made and a vote taken.
Ÿ Melissa Wear-Grimm made a motion to change the scholarship application wording in paragraph one to read ÒPHR/SPHR regular feesÓ. Motion seconded by Lisa Turner.
Ÿ Suggestion to add a line at the bottom of the application to request what certification the applicant will be testing for.
Ÿ Annie Horey suggested leaving the amount to read Ò$250Ó, with changes to text to read ÒÉapply for a $250 scholarship to be used toward a PHR/SPHR/GPHR certification.Ó All present agreed that this would be the better option.
Ÿ Melissa Wear-Grimm withdrew her motion, and Lisa Turner withdrew her second.
Ÿ Have Eric West put the application on the website.
President Abbott, Lynn Bourton and Barb Davis met to discuss AVHRAÕs awards from past to present. President Abbott advised she would send this list to the whole board for review
Lisa Turner advised she was having a difficult time contacting people regarding the school-to-work (STW) program. She was able to contact Sandy Northrup at Wenatchee High School and Julie Kunz at Eastmont High School. Both agreed to attend the September general meeting and speak on their school-to-work programs and about the new WA State requirements for high school students. Lisa is still trying to reach Reva Morgan at the new Tech Center. Discussion following:
Ÿ Kids setting patterns for the future and involving parents and employers.
Ÿ Some employers are currently supporting the STW programs Ð and the rest appear to be uninterested.
Ÿ AVHRA may be able to assist employers of the benefits of STW.
Ÿ It was suggested doing a Òfollow the studentÓ Ð so we know how well the student performs in the program.
Ÿ What role can the employer play in support of the program? Perhaps have the September presentation revolve around this question.
Ÿ It was suggested that we try to work with the NW Technical Skills Center. John Linder has expressed an interest in being involved.
q Scott Washburn had to withdraw as speaker for the June meeting due to his accepting a job with Tree Top. Mr. Washburn was going to speak on SHRM/NHRMA membership. However, he advised he will forward the information to Joy Neal.
q It was approved at the April meeting to have a drawing for a $160 SHRM membership to a non-member attendee of the June meeting at no charge to the winner.
q President Abbott advised that she will contact the YWCA to see if Cathy Pipkin (YMCA scholarship recipient) is still going to speak for a couple of minutes.
q Joy Neal will do the presentations on SHRM and NHRMA, and Sylvia advised she will do the AVHRA presentation. Sylvia will bring her computer equipment and operate the PowerPoint slideshow on SHRM, NHRMA and AVHRA.
q Steve Hanamura will be speaking on ÒUnderstanding and Managing the Dynamics of DiversityÓ on August 11, 2004 from 1pm Ð 4:30pm, at the Wenatchee Convention Center.
q All enrollment member information to be sent through NCRL.
q The workshop will be advertised through the AVHRA newsletter, Business Journal and the Wenatchee World Ð with note that registration forms and additional information can be obtained from Joy Neal at her e-mail address with a cut-off date of August 6th.
q The workshop is credit certifiable. Karen Bland will have the certification forms available at the workshop.
q Mr. Hamilton will blend three workshops into one in one half-day seminar: customer service, managing people, and maintaining positive flow Ð business strategy and leadership.
q President Abbott talked about whether or not to offer the workshop via teleconference.
q After discussion, it was decided to not offer teleconference. Consensus was to have the workshop in the morning and keep it simple. Offer fruit, bagels & Danishes, coffee, tea, juice, etc.
President Abbott advised we have compiled approximately 30 responses regarding the AVHRA Members Assessment Questionnaire.
Melissa Wear-Grimm shared regarding the Healthy seminar:
Ÿ Program topic is very important: communication and work ethics.
Ÿ Majority of respondents are large businesses.
Sylvia Martinez shared regarding the leadership diversity meeting:
Ÿ Supervisory skills were very important: learning and networking.
Ÿ Majority of respondents are large businesses.
q President Abbott shared that she did a presentation to SkillSource. It went very well.
q Joy Neal also attended a presentation sponsored by SkillSource and the Community Action Council. Mary Miller, an occupational health nurse from L&I, talked on child labor regulations (Teen Workplace Safety Ð Knowing the Rules for Employing Teens) Ð and did a wonderful presentation. Joy thought Ms. Miller could do a presentation for AVHRA at no charge. She will send this information to the Board members. (Lisa thought this might be a better program for the School-to-Work in September.)
q Will there be an ongoing opportunity to continue working with SkillSource and the Tech Center? President Abbott advised there will be many opportunities.
q FYI Ð there will be neither Board meeting nor General meeting in July.
The meeting adjourned at 5:40pm. The next Board meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, August 3, 2004, 4:00pm at Link Transit.
