I.               Welcome / Call to Order

Co-Presidents Barbara Davis and Gil Sparks called the meeting to order at 7:00 a.m.

 

II.        Introductory Joke

Co-President Sparks shared a joke submitted by Jo Ann Tucker.

 

III.       Review and Approval of the Minutes

Karen Bland reported that there were minor grammatical changes noted for the minutes dated November 10, 2005. Janice Soder moved to accept the minutes as written. Joan Lovitt seconded.

Discussion: None.

All present approved. Motion Passed.

 

IV.       Financial

Annie Horey was not available to review the reports. Therefore, Melissa Wear-Grim reviewed the balances of the Register Report and Balance Report. As of November 29, 2005, the Register Report showed a balance of $7,176.93, and the Balance Report showed an overall total of $16,890.64. Co-President Sparks shared the recap from the Employment Law Update held on November 17th. We had 92 attendees, with total incoming of $2,535. AVHRA profited approximately $1,200 after expenses.

V.        Board Reports

Programs

Jo Ann Tucker discussed the monthly programs:

December Ð Annual SHRM Foundation Silent Auction, scheduled on December 8th at Executive Flight, East Wenatchee. The following were discussed:

á      Jo Ann advised they are now planning for food. Martin Scott Winery is hosting the wine bar.

á      After discussion, it was decided that reservations need to be received by Friday, December 2nd in order to plan for food.

á      Advertising cannot be placed in newspapers because of the hosted bar. Therefore, only advertising will be by word-of-mouth.

 

January Ð RenŽ Zamora is scheduled to present a program on January 19, 2006.

 

February Ð Deloma Sherwood is scheduled to present a program on February 16, 2006.

 

á      A Òprogram meetingÓ is scheduled at The Roaster at noon on December 2, 2005. Melissa Wear-Grimm, 2006 President-Elect, invited all board members to attend.

á      Jo Ann shared that, at this time, there are no credits for 2006 programs.

á      The next Leadership Series is scheduled to begin on January 17th and will run for six weeks. These series are being led by Colin Brine, Upstream Northwest, and are geared toward front-line supervisors. An ad will run in the December issue of the Business Journal.

 

School to Work

Lisa Turner was not present to give an update. However, Lynn Bourton, 2006 School-to-Work Chair, advised that she will be sitting on the Job Fair Committee Ð the next meeting is scheduled for December 16th at the Wenatchee World. Lynn also shared that she met with John Linder from the Skills Center. He is very interested in AVHRA working with his students.

 

Membership

Sylvia Martinez reported that she distributed ten information packets at the Employment Law Update program, and has requests for five more. She reported she will have an annual review at the January board meeting. She also reported that she sent out an email blaster regarding the upcoming auction.

Board Reports, continued

Certification

Joan Lovitt advised she is finished with the current classes. She has two going to take the test. Joan said the class went very well, and that she has used three different revisions of the Human Resource Management text since becoming the Certification chair.

 

Newsletters

Ruth Erwert advised the deadline for the January newsletter is December 23, 2005. Ruth asked if the board wants to continue with a monthly newsletter, or switch to an every-other-month publication? She also advised she is researching a new printer to attempt to cut costs.

Ruth will explore the following discussion items regarding cost-saving measures:

á      Currently spending approximately $2,000 annually.

á      Do a survey to ascertain if members prefer to receive via email or US mail.

á      Have newsletter available at monthly meetings.

 

Publicity

Janice Soder reported the only ad published is in the Business Journal for the Leadership Series. She inquired as to whether or not to place an ad in the Wenatchee World Ð Co-President Sparks advised no.

 

Legislative

Steve Bobst advised that he normally attends Employers Day on the Hill Ð held in Olympia in January. He shared that he also takes advantage of meeting with the state legislators, and that he receives email updates from Cary Condotta. He also shared that Executive Flight will donate a flight tour for the auction.

 

Diversity

Arlene Abbott, 2006 Diversity Chair, shared that she met with Melissa Wear-Grimm last week to discuss programs. She is currently researching speakers, and is considering opportunities to collaborate with other agencies in a diversity program.

 

VI.       General Interest Items

 

á      2005 Ð 2006 Board Get-Together: Co-President Davis invited all 2005 and 2006 Board members for a get-together at InnaÕs Restaurant on Tuesday, December 13th.

á      Logo Wear: Co-President Davis spoke with Go USA regarding purchasing either a shirt or vest imprinted with the AVHRA logo for Board members to wear to special events. After discussion, it was decided that AVHRA would pay a portion of the purchase cost. Melissa Wear-Grimm will work with Co- President Davis in making a decision of which clothing item or items to offer.

General Interest Items, continued

á      Humor in the Workplace: Co-President Sparks advised that a HR student is working on her dissertation and has requested AVHRAÕs assistance in completing a survey for research purposes. Co-President Sparks has asked that this request be included in the next issue of the AVHRA newsletter.

á      2008 NHRMA Conference: Co-President Sparks met with Traci Sunday of the Tri-Cities Chapter and Helen Evans of the Yakima Chapter.

¤      He distributed to the Board copies of the NHRMA Annual Conference Planning Guide, and advised there is a need for a chair for the ÒprogramsÓ portion of the conference, as well as 2-4 committee members for this position.

¤      He advised there is also a need for at least one AVHRA member to sit on each of the other committees.

¤      In general discussion, Co-President Sparks advised that the sponsoring chapter(s) receive 25 percent of the profits achieved from the conference Ð which in our case equates to a three-way split of 25 percent.

¤      He advised that there would be a conference call with Kay Porter of Ewe Me & Co., Traci Sunday and Helen Evens to further discuss the conference. He invited the Board to sit in on the call.

á      By-Law Amendments: Co-President Sparks advised that the recommended amendments have been forwarded to SHRM. Among the recommended amendments include a change to include the full board and an end to term limits. Co-President Sparks asked the board to contact him prior to the January general meeting if there were any issues or concerns. A call for votes on amendments will be done at the January general meeting.

á      Volunteer of the Year: Co-President Davis advised that it is time to put out nominations for the 2005 Volunteer of the Year, and asked if anyone would be interested in heading this up. Arlene Abbott said she would head up this project.

á      Auction Donations: Melissa Wear-Grimm asked the board to keep seeking those auction items! Also, if there are any auction items to be collected, to please forward them to her or Lisa Turner by next Wednesday, or bring them to the auction on Thursday. Co-President Sparks shared that Melissa has been given power-of-attorney to bid on items for him. However, Melissa advised that what Co-President Sparks didnÕt say was that Òif he won the bidÉhe wouldnÕt necessarily get to keep the item!Ó
